Hardware Components in Cybersecurity Education

Hardware components have been designated as required academic content for colleges to be recognized as a center of academic excellence in cyber operations by the National Security Agency (NSA). To meet the hardware requirement, computer science and information technology programs must cover hardware concepts and design skills, topics which are less emphasized in existing programs. This paper describes a new pedagogical model for hardware based on network intrusion detection taught at college and graduate levels in a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education Program (CAE/IAE). The curriculum focuses on the fundamental concepts of network intrusion detection mechanisms, network traffic analysis, rule-based detection logic, system configuration, and basic hardware design and experiments. A developmental examination of the modeling of aggression and altruism

The present investigation examined the relative influence of three distinct model types, i.e., aggressive, altruistic and a model who displays both aggression and altruism, to elicit specific behaviors from children of two ages and both sexes. Sixty-four children, thirty-two (sixteen boys and sixteen girls) from the preschool and fourth grade levels were randomly selected as subjects. Each child observed a same sex model display the three model types in a specific task situation. Children, regardless of sex and age, imitated the altruistic model significantly more than the aggressive model and further, seemed to prefer altruistic responses over aggressive ones in all conditions. The implications of an altruistic predisposition are discussed in relation to the often cited male predisposition to be more aggressive

The context of parents and peers: linkages to children's school adjustment

The contexts of family and peer group play critical roles in shaping children's lives over their development. Biological theory suggests that these two contexts are interlinked to impact children's daily lives and should be examined in integrated models. The present study examined relationship quality with peers as a potential mediator that links maternal parenting style to children's school adjustment. Two dimensions of parenting style--maternal responsiveness and behavioral control, and three aspects of school adjustment--academic grades, problem behaviors in the school setting, and school related experiences of stress, were investigated. The mediation models were tested concurrently and longitudinally in a sample of 347 children during their 4th to 5th grades. Biological theory also suggests personal characteristics as one of the defining factors that influence developmental outcomes. Thus, child gender and child ethnicity were included as moderators in the proposed models. Using multiple regressions, results of the study indicated both dimensions of maternal parenting style and peer relationship quality were linked to children's well-being at school concurrently. Surprisingly, peer relationship quality was unassociated with behavioral problems. Short-term longitudinal associations were found between behavioral control and GPA and between responsiveness and school related stress. In terms of mediation, only maternal responsiveness had indirect effects on one of children's outcome variables via its influence on peer relationships concurrently. Also, moderation effects were not found in the proposed mediation models

Heterosexual romantic relationships, interpersonal needs, and quality of life in prison.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of having vs. not having a heterosexual romantic partner inside the prison on the relationship between interpersonal needs and quality of life. In-person interviews were conducted with 55 male and 64 female inmates from the Topas Penitentiary (Spain). Higher levels of social loneliness and lower levels of sexual satisfaction were associated with lower levels of quality of life. In addition, the interaction between sexual satisfaction and romantic partner status was significant. Higher levels of sexual satisfaction were associated with higher levels of quality of life only for the group without a partner. These findings support a “bad is stronger than good” principle and indicate the detrimental aspects that can be associated with not having a satisfactory sexual life while incarcerated
